First Interview | Brandon Fleming

1 September 2023

Deadline day arrival Brandon Fleming sat down with the Shrewsbury media team for his first interview as a Town player.

The left wing-back has been snapped up on a season-long loan from Hull.

Fleming has plenty of experience playing in both the Championship and League One.

The 23-year-old has made 28 appearances in the second tier for Hull, while he has also featured 27 times in League One during loan spells with Oxford and Bolton.

On joining Shrewsbury:

“I’m really happy to be here. I’ve trained with the lads this morning and it seems like a really good group.

“I’ve met all the staff – they seem great. It's a nice set-up and I’m just looking forward to the season now.”

On signing on deadline day:

“I trained at Hull yesterday and then got the call that it was all done.

“I set off last night and then came in this morning.

“Now I just want to play as many games as I can.

“Hopefully I’ll contribute some assists and I’m still to score my first career goal so it would be nice if I can do that this season.

“I’m just looking to be successful. All I want to do is play and win as many games as possible.

“I want to show what I can do because I know I’m a good player, I just need to show that this season.”

On his 2022/23 campaign:

“It was quite frustrating. At the start of the season – a week before the end of pre-season - I fractured my foot.

“I was out until about November time. I then played a few games for Hull but a new manager came in and things changed.

“I managed to get out on loan to Oxford and I really enjoyed my time there. It was a really good group of lads.

“Results-wise it wasn’t as successful on the pitch as I would have liked but it was still a great experience for me. I got to experience a different type of football.

"With the bad times – everyone is going to experience bad times in their career - I just think it’s important you come through the other end and learn from it. That is definitely what I did.”

On having played in the Championship and League One:

“They are similar leagues – the intensity is massive.

“League One is very intense. You don’t get as much time on the ball.

"In the Championship you get a little bit more time but you do get punished more for your mistakes due to the quality at the top end of the pitch. That's the main difference.”

On his style of play:

“I’m tenacious. I like to get up and down. I’ve got a good delivery and I try to create chances.

“I’m aggressive and I like to think I’m quite attacking. I want to get balls into the box.”

On what he knows about Shrewsbury:

“I don’t know any of the lads but I have played against quite a few of them.

“I know a couple of lads at Hull who have been here. I’ve spoken to them and they’ve got nothing but good things to say about the place and the club.”

On playing at Carlisle tomorrow:

“It’s a tough place to go Carlisle.

“We’ve had a meeting this morning on set-pieces which I think could be massive tomorrow – both boxes.

“I’m just looking forward to the game – hopefully we’ll get three points.”
