Match Report | Forest Green 3-0 Shrewsbury

5 September 2023

Shrewsbury fell to a 3-0 defeat at Forest Green Rovers in the EFL Trophy.

Goals from Dylan Kadji, Tyrese Omotoye and Matty Stevens saw the hosts claim all three points in Group A of the southern section of the competition.

Town dominated the first-half with Brandon Fleming, Max Mata and Dan Udoh all going close while Taylor Perry hit the post.

Forest Green opened the scoring against the run of play through Kadji. And they then went on to secure the points with two second half goals.

Team news:

Head coach Matt Taylor named a side with eight changes from Saturday's trip to Carlisle.

Jason Sraha, Tunmise Sobowale, Brandon Fleming, Ryan Finnigan and Max Mata were all given their first Town starts - with Mata lining up alongside Dan Udoh up front.

In goal, Harry Burgoyne got his first start of the season with Chey Dunkley and Tom Flanagan joining Sraha in the back three. Elliott Bennett and Taylor Perry partnered Finnigan in the middle of the park.

Forest Green, under the guidance of David Horseman, lined up in a 4-2-2-2 formation with Tyrese Omotoye and Matty Stevens in attack.

Report:

It was Salop who flew out of the blocks with Taylor's side creating two good chances to open the scoring inside the first six minutes.

First, Taylor Perry produced a brilliant run to surge into the box. He then hit a powerful shot that keeper Jamie Searle did really well to tip over.

Then from just outside the box, the bright Perry fizzed a strike that smashed the post before bouncing out.

Town had been well on top. However, FGR went on to open the scoring through Dylan Kadji - with the Bristol City loanee getting on the end of a cross before producing a great first touch and slotting it past Harry Burgoyne.

Town made a double change at the break with Tom Bayliss and Ryan Bowman replacing Perry and Udoh.

Rovers had the first chance of the second half as Matty Stevens’ low shot was well saved by Burgoyne.

And just two minutes later, Tunmise Sobowale went on a brilliant run down the right-hand side as he shrugged off two defenders before rounding Jamie Robson and putting a cross in.

At the hour mark, the hosts doubled their lead as Tyrese Omotoye picked up the ball in the box, before cutting back and slotting home.

Four minutes later, Forest Green scored again as Stevens drove forwards with the ball, before checking onto his right and curling a great strike into the top right corner from the edge of the box.

Kieran Phillips, who replaced Max Mata prior to Rovers' third, came so close to scoring with 15 minutes left to play.

The striker got played in behind by Bayliss, Phillips then cut inside and saw his strike tipped over by the outstretched Searle.

In the 84th minute, Town had another chance denied by the outstretched Searle as he met Bennett's free-kick with a strong palm.

From the resulting corner, Benning was fouled in the box and Salop were awarded a penalty. However, Bowman's spot kick was saved.
