Match Report | Carlisle United 2-0 Shrewsbury Town

2 September 2023

Shrewsbury fell to a 2-0 loss at Carlisle.

The hosts opened the scoring in the second half when, from a corner, the ball hit Tom Bayliss and found its way into the back of the net.

Joe Garner then doubled Carlisle's lead in the 96th minute as Town threw men forward in search of an equaliser.

Town had their chances in the game with Mal Benning, Dan Udoh and Max Mata going close. But it was the home side who claimed the points in the end.

Team news:

Boss Matt Taylor made one change to the team that secured victory at Fleetwood last weekend - with Mal Benning coming in for the injured Jordan Shipley at left wing-back.

It meant Town continued in a 3-5-2 formation with Ryan Bowman and Daniel Udoh as the front two.

On the bench, deadline day arrival Brandon Fleming appeared in the Salop squad for the first time.

But there was no substitute goalkeeper with Harry Burgoyne not travelling after his wife gave birth to a daughter in the early hours of this morning.

Carlisle also lined up in a 3-5-2 system with Luke Plange partnering Jordan Gibson in attack.

Report:

It was Town who started the brighter of the two teams with Taylor's men creating two decent chances to open the scoring inside the opening 20 minutes.

First, some lovely combination play involving Joe Anderson, Udoh and Benning ended with the wing-back seeing a powerful strike deflect millimetres past the post.

Udoh then tried his luck from 25 yards with his effort also sailing narrowly wide.

Gradually, the hosts began to grow in stature. And they created a couple of chances of their own before the break.

First, Plange looked to have got in behind the Town defence but Chey Dunkley swept across to put in a brilliant sliding block. Sam Lavelle headed over from the resultant corner,

The hosts then threatened again when Gibson’s low-driven shot was well saved by Marko Marosi.

Carlisle did break the deadlock shortly after the interval when Owen Moxon's corner came in at the near post and hit a couple of players before coming off Tom Bayliss and going into the net.

Shrewsbury looked for a quick response and they almost got it when Winchester played it into Udoh who drove into Carlisle’s box and saw a low-driven effort saved well at the near post by Jokull Andersson.

Town then had another chance as Elliott Bennett’s in-swinging cross was met by substitute Max Mata who glanced a header just wide of the post.

Carlisle then doubled their lead late on when substitute Garner fired past Marosi, thus securing the points for the hosts.
