Match Report | Shrewsbury 0-2 Wycombe

13 April 2024

Ten-man Shrewsbury fell to a 2-0 loss at home to Wycombe.

In what was a game where clear-cut chances were at a premium, the two teams cancelled each other out for the best part of 70 minutes.

But Tom Flanagan was then given a straight red card for a late challenge on Joe Low.

And in the final 10 minutes, the visitors went on to win it with goals from Luke Leahy and Richard Kone.

Team news:

Boss Paul Hurst made one change from the team that fell to an unfortunate defeat at league leaders Portsmouth last out - with Tom Bloxham coming back into the side at the expense of Elliott Bennett.

It meant Town lined up in a 4-2-3-1 system with Dan Udoh the lone striker. Bloxham was on the right flank with Jordan Shipley on the left and Tom Bayliss in the number 10 role.

Wycombe also lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation with former Salop skipper Leahy at left-back.

Garath McCleary and Gideon Kodua were the wide men with Dale Taylor operating behind striker Sam Vokes.

Report:

In what proved to be a cagey first half at the Croud Meadow, the ball spent the majority of its time in midfield with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances.

Town did have some bright moments. Shipley whipped in a dangerous cross that Luke Leahy cleared ahead of Taylor Perry.

A mix-up between goalkeeper Franco Ravizzoli and defender Low then saw Udoh see a shot from inside the box blocked.

Overall, though, the two teams cancelled each other out with very little goal-mouth action.

Town came out the brighter of the two teams following the re-start with Bayliss doing well to hit the byline before seeing a low cross claimed by the keeper.

A brilliant ball from Morgan Feeney then sent Bloxham charging towards goal. The ball then broke for Udoh who saw a shot well blocked by a defender.

On what was proving a frustrating afternoon, Town's task was made a lot more tricky with a little over 20 minutes to go when Flanagan was given a straight red card for a challenge on Low.

Wycombe committed more men forward from that point.

And they got themselves in front in the 83rd minute when a clever free-kick saw them work the ball to Leahy on the edge of the box.

He then guided the ball in from the edge of the box - with the former Town skipper opting not to celebrate.

In the 90th minute the visitors made it 2-0 when McCleary's cross was tapped in by Richard Kone.
