Post Reading | Jordan Shipley

24 February 2024

Jordan Shipley spoke to the press following Shrewsbury’s 3-2 win at Reading.

Shipley was influential in the win with the winger scoring a sensational volley from a corner before then going on to claim assists for Tom Bayliss and Tom Bloxham.

After the game, he spoke about the importance of the win, his spectacular goal and moving forward.

On the win:

“Obviously (I'm delighted). It’s three points on the board and this is a tough place to come, it has been for other teams that have come here this season.

"Reading have got a good team, so to come here, take three points and score three goals – we’ll take that any day.”

On scoring two goals in five minutes:

“It was a bit of a shock to the system really when Bayliss scored and we made it 2-0.

"But we quickly came back down to earth when they got it to 2-2.

"In that moment it could’ve gone either way, so credit to the boys, the character we showed to go and get a third.

“Then the second half was a real big push from everyone.”

On his goal:

“Every goal is special. We tried that (corner routine) at Northampton a few weeks ago and I just missed the target there.

“It took a little bit of a deflection but I don’t think the keeper’s saving it anyway.”

On Tom Bayliss’ goal:

“When I played it over the top and he ran onto it, I thought he’s not going to hit this with his left, he’s going to chop inside so to see him chop in and put it on the near post was great.

“We were all a bit like, 2-0 in five minutes what’s going on? But, the boys did really well today.”

On the character and belief to go 3-2 up:

“We watched their clips before the game and we knew they had a lot of attacking players that like to have cheating positions as you’d say. We set up to nullify that.

"When we went 2-0 up we thought 'here we go.'

"Then it goes to 2-1 and their crowd certainly got back into it so it was kind of backs to the wall it felt like for a bit.

“Then, they score again and we thought it could go either way.

"But it was some finish by Bloxham. I didn’t even know he could do a cartwheel (celebration) or whatever he did – I didn’t even know he could do it.

"It was a really good goal and I’m happy he got me an assist as well.”

On Tom Bloxham’s recent impressive performances:

“We all knew, even from pre-season, that he is a good player.

"He just needed to go and get regular minutes of football and he went to Morecambe and did really well.

“He’s come back in and ever since he’s done really well and been a threat down that right side.

"Today in the first half especially – he was running ragged down that side and causing problems.

“It’s really good to see him back and we all know what he can do so it’s nice to see.”

On the difficulty of the second half:

“We had a chat at half-time, obviously we wanted to go and score more goals.

"But we didn't want to lose the game either, so it was kind of ‘sit in shape, stay in shape, pick when to press and then hit them on the counter-attack.'

"At the end of the day, they were the ones who had to get a goal back.

“It stayed 0-0 for the second half and we’re happy about that.”On the away fans:

"It was unbelievable support. It’s about three hours from Shrewsbury so to come down on a Saturday loud and proud as always, credit to them.

“We go again Tuesday night away at Lincoln.”

On the league table:

“We don’t look at that, we just concentrate on ourselves, we know our targets and when we get that we know we’ll be alright.”
