Match Report | Northampton 0-2 Shrewsbury

27 January 2024

Shrewsbury secured a convincing and impressive win at Northampton in Paul Hurst's first game since returning as boss.

Goals from Dan Udoh and Chey Dunkley saw Town run out 2-0 winners at Sixfields in front of more than 750 travelling fans.

In truth, the margin of victory should have been even greater with Tom Bayliss denied what looked a clear penalty.

Goalkeeper Lee Burge also made excellent stops to keep out efforts from Tom Bloxham and Taylor Perry.

Overall, though, Town can be delighted with their display after creating plenty of chances and restricting the hosts to very little.

Team news:

Paul Hurst's first starting XI since returning to the club saw a shift in system with the boss ditching three at the back in favour of a 4-3-3 formation.

It saw Morgan Feeney deployed at right back with Mal Benning on the left and Aaron Pierre partnering Dunkley at the heart of the defence.

Carl Winchester sat in a holding midfield role with Taylor Perry and Bayliss slightly more advanced.

In attack, Jordan Shipley started on the left wing with Bloxham on the right and Udoh up front.

Northampton lined up in a 4-2-3-1 system that saw Tyreece Simpson operate as the lone striker with Mitch Pinnock in the number 10 role. Kieron Bowie and Sam Hoskins were the widemen.

Report:

With the away end bouncing, Town had a big shout for a penalty just six minutes in when Mal Benning found Bayliss in the box who was then bundled to the floor.

Town's players - and Bayliss in particular - all made big appeals for a spot-kick. But those shouts were waved away by referee Seb Stockbridge.

Less than 10 minutes later, Salop threatened again with a corner routine straight from the training ground as Bayliss crossed for Shipley on the edge of the box.

He then sent a powerful volley just over the bar.

Northampton grew in stature from that point. But long-range efforts from Sam Hoskins and Kieron Bowie proved to be their only genuine attempts on goal in the first half.
And just before the break, Town had two strong chances to break the deadlock.
First, Bayliss’ corner found Pierre who flicked a header just over the bar.
Then just moments later, Udoh picked out Bloxham who smashed the ball against the inside of the post from eight yards out.

The second half was dominated by Town from start to finish.
In the 57th minute, Udoh hit a low-driven effort that was saved by the keeper. But that was just a warning of what was to come.
Moments later, Udoh picked it up on the edge of the box before driving it into the bottom corner, helped by a deflection on the way, to make it 1-0.
The hosts did have a good chance of their own when Tony Springett’s effort was well stopped by Marko Marosi.
Despite this though, we continued to knock on the door with Dunkley seeing a powerful header from a corner hit goalkeeper Burge and bounce to safety.

Again, though, that just proved to be a warning of what was to come.

In what was almost an exact recreation of his earlier chance, Dunkley doubled Town's lead with a bullet header just eight minutes later, diverting Shipley's ball into the back of the net.
Moments before the 90th minute, Perry was close to adding a third as he went one-on-one with the keeper, but Burge stopped it well.
Six minutes were added on before the referee blew the whistle for full-time and chants of ‘Paul Hurst’s barmy army’ bellowed out from the travelling supporters.
