Pre Wrexham | Matt Taylor

6 January 2024

Matt Taylor met with members of the local and national press ahead of our FA Cup fixture with Wrexham.

Salop host local rivals Wrexham for the first time in 16 years when they meet in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.

In front of what will be a sold-out Croud Meadow, Matt's side are looking to continue their positive start to 2024 and back up last weekend's 3-1 victory over Fleetwood Town.

And following a busy New Year period, Town's squad is set to look healthier as players return from injury and our first winter signing Roland Idowu available to take part.

Speaking ahead of the game, Matt said:

"We've had a good training session today which has helped. Because of the amount of football the players have had and because the group is as limited on numbers as it has been, we've tried to give the players a little bit of downtime without in any way coming off them.

"To this point it's been a positive week but at the end of the day, regardless of how positive the week is, it's obviously the result and the performance that I'm really interested in for the weekend.

"We know that it will be a really difficult game, I'm really excited about the fact it's a sell-out, that really excites me and I know it will excite our players.

"What an opportunity for our players and look, the job for me and for our players is to go out and put in a performance which, as simplistic as it sounds, will win us a game of football.

"It'll be an electric atmosphere, we're looking forward to the start of the game. I'm a bit gutted I can't play, to be honest!"

On Jason Sraha:

"Jason's looking really good, he trained all week alongside Tom Bayliss which has been a real positive because we've lacked numbers.

"And that's not to say Jason and Tom are numbers, they are really important players to us.

"It increases competition, we haven't had that often enough, so training was of a really high standard today.

"The quality was really good in terms of the competitiveness so we're now at a stage where we're ramping up to a really big game where everyone who is available wants to play, which is a great position for me to be in."

On Roland Idowu:

"Roland will be in the squad. We can have nine subs so I think we'll just about get there with a couple of the lads coming back in.

"The squad is looking slightly more healthy. It's still not where we'd want it to be but we've got good competition at the moment, good competition in the back areas, midfield is good and at the top of the pitch we've got players who are contributing.

"I hope and I pray that our players go out and perform to the levels they can do. Then it's irrelevant because we know Wrexham are a really good team with some exceptional players and a really experienced manager and a clear philosophy.

"It will be a tough fixture but one we're looking forward to."
