Match Report | Shrewsbury 0-2 Blackpool

2 March 2024

Shrewsbury fell to a 2-0 loss at home to Blackpool.

In a game where neither side created a lot, goals from Karamoko Dembele and Hayden Coulson won it for Neil Critchley's side.

Town had their moments with Dan Udoh and Jordan Shipley both going close.

But it was the visitors who found that touch of quality when needed to take the points back to Lancashire.

Team news:

Boss Hurst opted to make four changes from the team that travelled to Lincoln on Tuesday.

Switching to a 3-4-2-1 formation, Tunmise Sobowale came into the side at right wing-back with Mal Benning back on the left after welcoming the arrival of a baby boy earlier in the week.

At centre-back, Chey Dunkley was partnered by Jason Sraha and Morgan Feeney with Carl Winchester and Jack Hincy sitting in midfield.

In attack, Tom Bloxham and Jordan Shipley operated in the number 10 role just behind Dan Udoh.

Blackpool lined up in a 3-5-2 system with former Town man Matt Pennington of three central defenders. Shayne Lavery and Jake Beesley were the front two.

In what was a quiet opening 20 minutes, both teams only managed to create half-chances.

For Blackpool, Dembele found Lavery in the box with his shot blocked by a defender.

Then for Town, Udoh burst into the box before seeing a low effort claimed by Dan Grimshaw.

Minutes later, Salop created the game's first real chance when Sobowale picked it up on the right before laying it off for Bloxham.

He then whipped in a dangerous cross that Udoh met - with his header sailing inches wide.

It was the visitors, though, who went on to open the scoring just before the break when Coulson ventured down the right, before squaring it to Dembele who composed himself before firing past Harry Burgoyne.

Town had another decent opportunity following the re-start.

Udoh collected the ball on the left before drilling it back to Shipley whose powerful, first-time effort flashed just wide.

With around 20 minutes left to play, Paul Hurst looked to switch things around by making a triple change as Taylor Perry, Tom Bayliss and Aiden O’Brien entered the fray.

Salop then had another chance to equalise when, from a corner, the ball fell for Morgan Feeney but from close range, he couldn't connect.

Then Tangerines then doubled their lead in the closing stages when Dembele cut back before whipping in a cross which was headed by an unmarked Coulson.
