Scottish-born Doig came through the youth ranks at Queen of the South before moving to Nottingham Forest as a 16-year-old.
He went on to make 77 appearances for Forest before moving to Northampton Town in 2005, where he made 120 appearances.
Doig then enjoyed spells in Australia and Indonesia before moving back to England where he finished his career with Grimsby.
It was during his time in Cleethorpes that he became assistant manager to Paul Hurst and joined Town alongside Hurst in October 2016.
Doig has since worked with Hurst at Salop, Ipswich, Scunthorpe United and Grimsby again.
He returned to Shrewsbury alongside Paul in January 2024.
