John Askey became Shrewsbury Town Manager in June 2018 after Paul Hurst left to join Ipswich Town.

Askey joined from Macclesfield Town, where he had spent the previous 34 years of his career, both as a player and a manager.

John was a striker by trade and came through the Port Vale Academy before joining Macclesfield in 1984. His 19 year playing career saw him score 106 goals in 490 games for the Silkmen.

After retiring as a player, he was appointed as Assistant Manager before a brief spell as Manager during the 2003/04 season.

He returned to the backroom staff in 2004 and worked as a Youth Team Coach and Assistant Manager, before once again getting the top job in 2013.

His second spell in charge was a successful one as he took Macclesfield to the 2017 FA Trophy Final, before guiding Macclesfield back into the Football League by winning the National League in 2017/18.
