Match Preview | Peterborough United

5 April 2023

Shrewsbury Town host Peterborough United this Friday in the Sky Bet League One. Kick-off is at 3pm.

With Town aiming for their sixth home win in a row, both sides will be looking for a better result than the one they picked up at the weekend.

Salop suffered defeat on Saturday while Posh had to settle for a draw at home to out-of-form Oxford United.

There have been 60 meetings between Salop and Posh, with each club winning 21 of those and the remaining 18 ending in draws. The last meeting between the sides ended in a victory for Peterborough, as they won 2-1 at the London Road Stadium in March. Before that, Shrewsbury were 3-1 winners in the second round FA Cup tie at Montgomery Waters Meadow in November last year.

Name: Peterborough United

Stadium: London Road Stadium

Founded: 1934 (89 years ago)

One to watch: Jonson Clarke-Harris

Jonson Clarke-Harris has scored 22 times in the league this season for Posh, with a further two in the EFL Trophy. The 28-year-old striker was top scorer for Posh last season with 12 goals in their Championship campaign. Before Peterborough, Clarke-Harris was with Bristol Rovers from January 2019 until he re-joined Posh in August 2020.

Match Report | Shrewsbury Town 0 - 3 Peterborough United

7 April 2023

Town fell to a 3-0 defeat at home to Peterborough.

We entered the game having won our last five matches at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

But the visitors were given a huge helping hand in the first half when referee Carl Boyson very harshly judged that Matt Pennington had fouled Ephron Mason-Clark in the box.

Despite there looking to be next to no contact, the official awarded a penalty which Jonson Clarke-Harris converted.

Second-half goals from Mason-Clark and Jack Taylor then sealed the points for Peterborough.

Manager Steve Cotterill opted for a 3-5-2 system for what was our first home game since March 11, with Ryan Bowman and Christian Saydee the front two.

With Tom Flanagan out due to suspension, skipper Luke Leahy dropped into the back three alongside Matt Pennington and Chey Dunkley.

Taylor Moore and Jordan Shipley were utilised as wing-backs.

Killian Phillips accompanied Carl Winchester in the middle of the park with youngster Tom Bloxham more advanced in the number 10 role.

Darren Ferguson's Peterborough side went with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Clarke-Harris in the centre-forward position.

Shrewsbury started brightly and created the game's first chance when they cleverly switched play to find Moore wide on the right.

The wing-back then did well to cut inside before hitting a low drive that Will Norris claimed.

Peterborough created their first chance in the ninth minute when Jack Taylor drove towards the edge of the box before smashing a low strike against the base of the post.

The ball then ricocheted to Ephron Mason Clark whose snap shot was expertly parried away by Marko Marosi.

Just before the 20th minute, Saydee had to depart the pitch due to injury and was replaced by Elliott Bennett.

That meant Steve Cotterill opted to change shape with Town switching to a 4-1-4-1 formation.

Pennington moved to right back with Dunkley and Leahy at the heart of the defence, and Moore switched to left back.

Winchester sat just behind Bennett and Phillips in the middle of the park, with Bloxham out on the right and Shipley on the left. Bowman was the lone striker.

The visitors got themselves in front in what looked to be fortuitous circumstances in the 28th minute - with Pennington very harshly judged to have fouled Mason-Clark in the box.

Despite there looking to be very little contact, referee Carl Boyson pointed to the spot with Clarke-Harris scoring the resultant penalty.

Two minutes later, Peterborough should have been 2-0 up with Kwame Poku going clean through on goal only to fire wide.

Peterborough did double their lead early in the second half when Mason-Clark cut in from the flank before finding the bottom corner with a low strike from 18 yards.

Town almost pulled a goal back instantly with Dunkley meeting a corner only to see his header sail inches past the post.

The away side got their third in the 83rd minute when a cross came in from the left.

Marosi parried it away. But the ball fell kindly to Taylor who converted from close range.
