In the end, the Shrews were unable to find an equaliser but Dawes was proud of his side's effort on the day.

Northern Irishman Chris Gallagher nearly pulled Town level with 25 minutes to go as the ball rolled to him on the edge of the box before his fierce strike was punched over the crossbar by the West Brom 'keeper.

Head of Academy coaching Ian Dawes made several changes at half-time although it was the Baggies who took the lead with 64 minutes on the clock as a cross from the right was turned in low to the far post.

The hosts, as expected, had chances to take the lead before they eventually did, with Town goalkeeper Harry Lewis making a smart stop with his feet ten minutes before half-time.

McAtee again tried his luck with a chip from the inside right around 20 yards out, but this time his attempt went over the crossbar.

First-year scholar Jon McAtee had a delightful chip over the goalkeeper ruled out for offside in the opening stages, while the Baggies also fired wide following  a short corner at the other end.

The Baggies pinched the only goal of the game with a flick from a low cross in the 64th minute, but Town's Under-18s did plenty to trouble West Brom's defence on the day.

Shrewsbury Town's youth team began their pre-season fixture schedule in positive fashion despite defeat at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday morning.
