Gaffer reflects on Bristol City friendly

Shrewsbury Town faced Bristol City away in the second game of the Clubs Pre-Season campaign.

Askey’s men fought it out a 1-1 draw against the Championship side away at Ashton Gate, with a first half goal from Stefan Payne.

Askey was pleased with his side’s performance against the team in a higher division. “It was really good,” said John. “Wednesday was about getting minutes under the belt and not doing too much.

“These games are the ones that really test your fitness and I thought it was a really good work out for everyone.

“It helps with confidence, I thought it was really encouraging.”

Both goals came in the first half with Callum O’Dowda’s goal coming in the 12th minute and Stefan Payne’s strike cancelling out the midfielder’s goal shortly after.

Askey was also pleased to see another one of his attacking players get on the score sheet so early on in the campaign. He said: “I played Stefan wider today and I think it suited him,” Askey said.

“He looked dangerous all game and I was really pleased with him. Not just his goal but his work rate and his appetite for the game.”

Askey’s men next face Burnley in a behind closed doors friendly as Askey continues to assess his squad.
